First Christian Church of Decatur was founded on Christmas Day 1921, and has served faithfully ever since with a significant urban ministry, an inclusive theology, and a Kingdom-building vision. We are open and accepting of all of God’s people, and encourage women, men, and young people to follow their call from God to serve, just as Christ first served us. You may join First Christian Church by transfer of membership, confession of faith, or by renewal of the vows of your baptism. Disciples of Christ congregations are delighted to recognize all baptisms. We baptize by immersion at an age of understanding. If you have not been baptized we will schedule one with you at a later date. Pastor-led classes on “Baptism and Belonging” are offered on a regular basis.

First Christian Church of Decatur respects and recognizes that God's spirit is poured out on all people, including women, men, children and youth. Our various ministries are living testimonies that God's call and empowerment to serve is inclusive in nature and in practice. All are included, and everyone is essential. We are blessed to have a vibrant and functioning Church Board, which is responsible for overseeing and supporting our many ministries of grace. Dear Friends, Greetings! I do hope that you and yours are well. One of my favorite quotes is by Frederick Buechner. He wrote, "The place God calls you to is the place where your deepest gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." At that intersection we meet the Living Christ and discern our vocation. Speaking both personally and professionally, I am delighted to be able to practice my vocation, my calling, if will, on a daily, full-time basis. The synergy of message, mission, and ministry comes alive everyday amongst the people of God, and I am blessed to meet you there...and here. Here you will find a regular column called "Focus" that I write for the church and wider community as well as some of my sermons. Enjoy! Your feedback and insights are more than welcome. Sunday Morning Spiritual Opportunities

9:30 am - 10:30 am Beacon / Keystone Class The Beacon / Keystone class meets in the beautiful Schwab Chapel and studies The Present Word curriculum series. This series continues to be one of the most popular curricula for adults seeking a meditative and reflective Bible study with practical applications for their lives and relationships. Based on the Cooperative Uniform Lesson Series, The Present Word carries on the legacy of Bible Discovery with relevant, stimulating explorations of Scripture and the answers it provides for the issues we face today. Pathfinders Pathfinders is an inter-generational, discussion class. Our mission is to be an open, all-inclusive, Bible -based, discussion class. Our studies range from current issues to in-depth Bible study. We have completed a study of Unbinding the Gospel led by The Rev. Dr. James Brewer-Calvert. Prior to this study, we studied and discussed a series of books by J. Ellsworth Kalas and James W. Moore. In addition, we participated in an in-depth study of the Book of Matthew led by Mary Frances Early. Currently, we are learning more about the Disciples through "Exploring the Disciples' Identity" led by The Rev. Dr. James Brewer-Calvert. Then, we will begin study and discussion of Kalas' Detective Stories from the Bible. All are welcome to join us for open discussion of the Word and how we as contemporary Christians live the Word on a daily basis. Baptism and Belonging The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) practices baptism by immersion at an age of understanding. Often called a "Pastor's Class" or "Confirmation Class" in other denominations, First Christian Church of Decatur is delighted to periodically offer a study of the meaning of baptism, leading each participant to decide whether to accept Christ as Lord and Savior and to be baptized by immersion. We also explore what it means to be a member of a vibrant community of faith. This four-to-six week study is offered on Sunday mornings and is taught by our Pastor alongside our Eldership, and is open to youth and adults. Leader: Rev. Mission statement We are a service organization within First Christian Church open to all men in the church. We are dedicated to improving conditions of our church and its members, as well as our surrounding neighborhood community. The Disciple Men's Ministry was founded by non-clergy men who wished to serve their church family. The group was originally known as the Layman's League and later the Christian Men's Fellowship.

Ministers: All the People Your Church Staff

Rev. Dr. James L. Brewer-Calvert Senior Pastor Pastor James L. Brewer-Calvert is delighted to be able to get up every morning, raring to go and serve Christ and the whole people of God. James was born and raised in East Harlem in New York City. His parents, Buffy and George Calvert, were urban missionaries, starting and sustaining multi-ethnic congregations committed to embodying the social gospel of Jesus Christ. James received a B.A. degree from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass.; a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in NYC; and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He is married to the Rev. Betty Brewer-Calvert, who is the Director of Women’s Ministries for the Christian Church in Georgia. They have two children, three cats, and a rescue lab. James has been the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Decatur since February 1998, and, as he is fond of saying, is here for as far as he can see. Previously, James served congregations in East Harlem; Dallas, Texas; and Jackson, Tennessee. A member of the Decatur Rotary Club and a Trustee of the Christian College of Georgia, he has also served in a variety of neighborhood, city and regional organizations that seek to make a difference in the world today. His hobbies include reading fiction and non-fiction, playing and coaching sports, fitness training, clowning, and sampling every dish at pot-luck suppers. William E. Garner Director of Music William earned his B.S.Ed in music and his M.M.E. from Western Carolina University where he was also the Graduate Assistant to the University's School of Music. He has served as the Director of Music in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1994. In 1998 William became the Director of Music at First Christian of Decatur (Disciples of Christ) where he directs the Chancel Choir and Handbell Ensemble. Sherry L. Davis Church Secretary Sherry is retired from AT&T Communications and the Georgia Army National Guard. She began working at the First Christian Church of Decatur during June of 2003 as the Church Administrator and keeps the church running with her organizational skills. Kathleen N. Westbrook Organist Kathy began playing the organ at age 14. She graduated from Ithaca College in New York State with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and with organ as her major instrument. She received her Master of Education degree from Brenau Universtiy. Kathy has been organist at the First Christian Church of Decatur since the fall of 1975. She has also served as Children's Choir director, Sunday School teacher and Chi Rho and CYF leader. Kathy has taught elementary music in the Dekalb County school system since 1989. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome you to the Lord's Table, as God has welcomed us. Established on the American Frontier in the early 1880's, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is the oldest and largest Protestant church founded in the United States. Congregations that celebrate the intersection of faith and reason sprang up across Virginia and Kentucky and grew from there. Simplicity and unity, freedom and practicality remain basic tenets of our heritage and our vision. We believe that the New Testament, particularly the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, form the basis of our Christian faith practice and daily life. As Disciples of Christ, we respect diversity of thought and advocate responsible and conscientious religious and intellectual freedom. We hold that "in essentials, unity, in opinion, liberty, and in all things, LOVE" (Thomas Campbell, co-founder of our denomination). Christian Unity is our "polar star," because ecumenism is an important way of life and mission. In all things we strive to practice the spiritual discipline in a manner that is both socially relevant and intellectually sound. The Chalice, which features St. Andrew's cross, symbolizes the central place of communion in worship, which is served weekly. The Lord's Table is open to all who desire to participate. Applications for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship Applications are now being received for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship. The Scholarship is designed to help Georgia Disciples pursue seminary education and honors a distinguished Disciples pastor who served the First Christian Church from 1942 - 1972. Schwab, a native of Kansas, studied at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 and the M.A. Degree in 1927. After serving as pastor for several years he enrolled in Yale Divinity School where he received B.D. Degree in 1937. Phillips honored him with the Doctor of Divinity Degree. Eligibility To be considered for the Scholarship a candidate must meet the following requirements:

Hold membership in a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia for a minimum of one year, or show evidence of having been a member of such a congregation prior to beginning an educational career;
Have successfully completed one year's requirements toward the Master of Divinity Degree at a theological school affiliated with the Division of Higher Education of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), or Candler School of Theology at Emory University or Columbia Theological Seminary, other schools are considered on a case-by-case study;
Have a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the institution where enrolled concerning the student's promise for ministry.

The Schwab Scholarship will be awarded and administered by the Endowment Trustees of the First Christian Church of Decatur with the advice of the ministerial staff of that church. In making the award the committees will give consideration to academic achievement, financial need and promise for ministry. The award will be announced by the end of June, the month of Dr. Schwab's birthday and the anniversary month of his ordination. Completed applications must be received by May 1, 2011. You may apply for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship by downloading the application or by requesting a mailed application by calling the church office (404-378-3621).

Based on the Cooperative Uniform Lesson Series, The Present Word carries on the legacy of Bible Discovery with relevant, stimulating explorations of Scripture and the answers it provides for the issues we face today. Applications for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship Applications are now being received for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship. The Scholarship is designed to help Georgia Disciples pursue seminary education and honors a distinguished Disciples pastor who served the First Christian Church from 1942 – 1972. Schwab, a native of Kansas, studied at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 and the M.A. Degree in 1927. After serving as pastor for several years he enrolled in Yale Divinity School where he received B.D. Degree in 1937. Phillips honored him with the Doctor of Divinity Degree. Eligibility To be considered for the Scholarship a candidate must meet the following requirements: Hold membership in a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia for a minimum of one year, or show evidence of having been a member of such a congregation prior to beginning an educational career; Have successfully completed one year’s requirements toward the Master of Divinity Degree at a theological school affiliated with the Division of Higher Education of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), or Candler School of Theology at Emory University or Columbia Theological Seminary, other schools are considered on a case-by-case study; Have a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the institution where enrolled concerning the student’s promise for ministry. The Schwab Scholarship will be awarded and administered by the Endowment Trustees of the First Christian Church of Decatur with the advice of the ministerial staff of that church. In making the award the committees will give consideration to academic achievement, financial need and promise for ministry. The award will be announced by the end of June, the month of Dr. Schwab’s birthday and the anniversary month of his ordination. Completed applications must be received by May 1, 2011. You may apply for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship by downloading the application or by requesting a mailed application by calling the church office (404-378-3621).

Service Projects

"Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting" Continuing Projects Used Clothing: Bring good used clothing for the Georgia Regional Hospital. They are to be placed in the first Nursery room on the right of the main hall in our church building. Least Coin Collection: A Church Women United project, the Fellowship of the Least Coin calls you to: Pray regularly for women in every part of the world; become an instrument of reconciliation in your family, your neighborhood, in action which brings people of different races and nations more nearly in harmony and set aside as a token of participation....a least coin (one penny). Our Least Coin collections are gathered and taken to the annual May Friendship Day celebration each year. The funds are administered by the Asian Women's Conference for Ministries of mercy on every continent and for experiences which create Christian Community across all lines. Blessing Boxes: Please place in an "Often-looked-at-area" of your home and drop a coin in for each special blessing you or your family receives. Examples: A happy recovery from illness, a new baby just home from the hospital, a victory over difficulty, a safe journey, everyday family love. Blessing box offerings are over-and-above gifts to the outreach ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) around the world. The blessing of giving is ours, but the coins become blessings for others as they support an entire program of outreach. Blessing Box Offerings will be collected at C.W. F. Retreat in the Fall each year. Campbell Soup Labels: Please save your Campbell Soup labels and other Campbell products. Leave them in the Service Project Envelope next to the CWF bulletin board at the church. These will be given to the Christmount Christian Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Magazines: Magazines will be taken to the VA Hospital. Childrens, Guideposts, Reader's Digest, People. Take address labels off and place them in CWF Service Box. NO SUNDAY SCHOOL MATERIALS. Magazines with plenty of pictures are favorites. Soft Drink Pull Tabs: Ronald McDonald House. Place pull-tabs in CWF Service Box. Recycle Hearing Aids and Glasses: Place in CWF Service Box. Postage Stamps: Used stamps, foreign or domestic, over 37 cents. Soldiers Serving in Iraq: The Christian Women's Fellowship has a soldier serving in Iraq, Matthew Ehlers. We can send cards/letters. Packages sent could include peanuts, sunflower seeds, all-beef jerky, crunchy granola bars, cheese curls, games such as word finds, crossword puzzles, card games and peg games. They also have access to CD and DVD players. RESTRICTIONS: Nothing that melts, no tobacco products, no pornographic materials, no pork products (not allowed in Muslim countries) and no violent CD's or DVD's of any kind. PRAYERS DEFINITELY ACCEPTED!

Monthly Projects

JANUARY - Take down and store Advent decorations. Warm coats, jackets, gloves, earmuffs, caps and hats for Pastor Paul's ministry. FEBRUARY - Assist with Valentine Soup/Salad Luncheon on February 14 MARCH - Kitchen clean-up. Do thorough cleaning of cabinets, replace shelf paper, organize items appropriately, etc. APRIL - Mountain View Personal Care Home - specific needs published later. Mountain View is a personal care facility for elderly with limited resources. Also donations of food for the Decatur-area Emergency Assistance Ministry (DEAM) Food Pantry. MAY - Magazines and books for VA Medical Center. The Atlanta VAMC is a tertiary care center that is dedicated to providing both primary and specialized outpatient health care, extended care, acute medical, surgical, intermediate and psychiatric care services with almost all major specialties and subspecialties represented. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. The Mission of the Atlanta VA is to provide timely and compassionate healthcare, which contributes to the well-being and quality of life of our veterans. Campbell Soup labels for Christmount Christian Assembly. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Christmount is the camp, conference and retreat center for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), whose mission is to serve God by providing opportunities for life-changing and enriching experiences in faith, knowledge, leadership and personal relationships. JUNE/JULY - Clean Sanctuary AUGUST - Hagar's House - school supplies. Hagar's House is a women and children's shelter located in Decatur and is a ministry of Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM). SEPTEMBER - Ronald McDonald House can tabs and grocery items- such as individual soups, cereal, etc. Ronald McDonald House is a "home away from home" for families while their child goes through treatment at Children's Healthcare. OCTOBER - To Be Announced Remember Decatur-area Emergency Assistance Ministry Food Pantry. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER - Decorations for Advent - December 1 - check all decorations, refurbish if needed, clean globes, plan and decorate sanctuary, office doors, fellowship hall, outside doors, steeple room and narthex. Assist in Chrismon Service and Tasting Party.

The Children Worship & Wonder Worship Center concept is an exciting way for children to experience God while learning about God. This approach uses a sensorimotor style of storytelling as a primary means for encountering God, so that God is experienced, not just learned about. The key to this approach is a worship context for telling and working with Biblical stories, instead of a school environment. Children learn to find the quiet place within, which enables them to get ready to worship "all by themselves" rather than sit in church in imposed silence. A Typical Sunday Morning Session

Getting Ready for the Story- The doorway is a very important place, From the moment the child enters the room, the storyteller and greeter and the room itself help the child get ready to God's Word.
Hearing the Word- In the fall, we focus on the stories of Hebrew Scripture. In Advent, we begin with the birth of Jesus and move through the stories of his ministry and resurrection. In the spring, we introduce the New Testament Stories.
Responding to the Story- Each child chooses how he or she would like to respond to the story. Everything in the room is for the child to use. Each child has a special folder to store their unfinished work from week to week.
Gathering Again- A time to "share the feast" or just be together.
Going with God's Blessing- Another threshold moment! Each child leaves with a special blessing or "good word" from the storyteller. The greeter will meet you at the door and help with the transition into the week ahead.

Rhymes and learning tools start laying a foundation on which to build Christian principals from the start. We a volunteer system in place so parents can enjoy the services and Sunday school at ease. Our nursery volunteers will take special care of each child from the moment they arrive until it is time to go home. They will provide a safe and clean environment. We have rocking chairs, cribs and a nursing room available for Mom, if needed.

Welcome to First Christian Church of Decatur's community playground and park.

The park is provided by the First Christian Church of Decatur as a community service to all its neighbors.

Church Requests

Hours of operation. Daylight to Dark.
Play at your own risk.
Please remove broken toys so children can play in a safe environment.
Read information banners and signs announcing events and cleaning opportunites.
Be a good neighbor by keeping the park clean.
No liquor, wine or beer consumption allowed in the parks.
No open fires.
No reservation system in place for picnic areas or open air pavilions. First come first serve system.
No Loitering.

In 1999, residents of the Ponce de Leon Heights neighborhood joined hands with members of the First Christian Church of Decatur to revitalize 1.3 acres of church property with the goal of creating a community park. In three years we raised nearly $50,000 and transformed the lot into a verdant green space for free play and organized activities.

Park Campaign & Fund

The Park is a joint initiative of the First Christian Church of Decatur and the Ponce de Leon Heights Neighborhood Association. All donations are tax-deductible and placed in a trust account established by the First Christian Church of Decatur in October 2000. The account is administered by a Park Advisory Committee (PAC) consisting of three members of the Church, the Senior Minister of the Church and three-non-church residents of the neighborhood. The PAC meets regularly and advises the Church on the redevelopment and maintenance of the Playground. The Playground Fund Account is administered with the recommendation of the PAC.

Funerals & Memorials

First Christian Church of Decatur Disciples of Christ Funeral and Memorial Policy Our Ministry to Families, Loved Ones and Friends The church provides the facilities and support in time of loss within a Christian environment. In a time of death we rejoice in God’s promise of ever-lasting life through our savior Jesus Christ. The First Christian Church of Decatur is grateful for the opportunity to provide pastoral services, counseling, worship and leadership at such a time.

The Date

Contact should be made with the church secretary or pastor as soon as possible to clear the date for funeral/memorial services. You will then be put in contact with our pastoral staff. They will work with your funeral directors to assist with arrangements.

Facilities

The sanctuary, chapel, minister’s study, parlor, fellowship hall and kitchen facilities are available to meet your specific needs. The facilities may be heated or air-conditioned. A fee schedule is included.

Senior Pastor Performs All Services

All funeral/memorial services are performed by ordained clergy on our church staff. We have this policy in order to insure the theological integrity of the ceremony. If the family desires another ordained clergy person to assist, the host minister is to be consulted. Although we will strive to meet the desires of the family, our senior pastor retains final say on the order of the service, the theological and appropriate musical content, and who is responsible for assisting and leading the ceremony.

Pastoral Counseling

The senior minister and our pastoral staff are available for grief and spiritual counseling.

Music

The organist of the church is expected to play for all funerals/memorial services. The family my also involve other musicians or recorded music. The church organist has the final say on all music.

Flowers and Mementos

Flowers may be placed in the sanctuary or chapel prior to services. We asked that they not be placed in a manner that might pose a safety hazard. The family’s personal mementos are permitted as long as they are dignified and do not hinder the reverence of the ceremony. The communion table should not be used for this purpose and its appointments should not be removed. Do not block the view of the organist. All personal items and flowers should be removed from the church as soon as possible following the ceremony.

Reception Facilities

The fellowship hall and kitchen facilities are available to the family to meet their specific needs. The church will furnish tables and chairs upon request. Caterers will provide other items, according to the family’s preference. Protective coverings shall be placed under all candelabra with every precaution made against possible fire. All flowers and personal mementos shall be removed as soon as possible from the fellowship hall. If the family chooses to have a simple receiving line the church’s narthex may be used.

Additional Policies

The church will not be liable for any items that are lost, stolen, or damaged. Also, the use of alcohol in any form is forbidden within the church facilities or church grounds. Church facilities are smoke free.

Mission: To develop the total stewardship potential of the Congregation and see that the financial resources are responsibly used. Significant questions we want everyone (adults, youth and children) to be able to answer:

What does it mean to be a steward?
Of what are we stewards?
What is the role of money in my life, as a member of the body of Christ?

Key concepts we want everyone to know:

God loves us and wants us to have all that we need to live a joyful productive life.
All that we are and all that we have are gifts from God.
Regularly giving of our time, abilities, energy and money is a spiritual practice.
Recognize that tithing is an important spiritual practice. It helps establish a healthy regard for money. It helps us to live the life God hopes we will have.

Stewardship comes from the concept that all we have and all that we are comes from God, who has gifted us with talents and abilities, through which we relate to others, earn a living and interact in our daily life. Just as in life we show our appreciation by using the gifts we receive, God asks us to share the gifts we have been given. Weddings

Our Ministry for Marriage The church provides the marriage ceremony because the covenant of marriage has been established by God and blessed by our Savior Jesus Christ. In a wedding we rejoice that God's universal love is made specific and personal as two people celebrate the beginning of their life together. First Christian Church of Decatur is grateful for the opportunity to provide pastoral counseling, the assistance, and the facilities, and worship leadership for such an important moment.

All-inclusive Package Fee Rates

One All-inclusive Fee for Members*: $699 One All-inclusive Fee for Friends: $999 All-inclusive Package includes access to the Church Facilities, including Social Hall; Pastor and Pre-Marital Counseling; Church Organist; Wedding Coordinator; and Custodian. Please pay a down payment to book date and complete payment of all fees at the rehearsal.

Facilities

The sanctuary, chapel, minister's study, and the parlor are all available as possible wedding sites. Brides and their bridesmaids may dress for the wedding in the parlor or in the bride's room. The groom's party may dress in the men's room next to the minister's study or in an available classroom. The sanctuary or chapel may be heated or air conditioned.

Senior Pastor Performs All Services

All weddings here are performed by ordained clergy on our church staff. We have this policy in order to insure the theological integrity of each marriage ceremony. If the couple to be married desires to have another ordained clergy person assist, the host minister is to be consulted. Our senior pastor retains final say on the order of service, the theological content, and who is responsible for assisting and leading the ceremony.

Pre-Marital Counseling

The minister participates in a wedding only after consultation and counseling with the bride and groom. Depending upon individual needs, expect from one to four counseling sessions with the minister. The sessions establish the significance of the wedding service and the responsibilities of marriage. The bride and groom shall arrange pre-marital conferences with the minister as far in advance as possible in order to enjoy an adequate period of time for planning and consultation.

Music for Weddings

The organist of the church is expected to play for all weddings. In case the organist is unable to serve, the church will suggest a substitute or the couple may provide one. When the date has been set, the church organist will gladly assist in the selection of appropriate music. Couples are invited to schedule a conference with the organist to select music. If the couple chooses a vocal or instrumental soloist, the soloist is expected to schedule a rehearsal hour with the organist. The church organist has final say on all music.

Rehearsals and Wedding Director

The wedding rehearsal should be scheduled when the wedding date is fixed. A rehearsal should begin promptly and should proceed in a quiet, dignified and reverent manner. The wedding rehearsal shall be under the direction of the minister or the church's wedding consultant. Other bridal consultants are welcomed at rehearsal to observe and advise and may certainly attend the wedding to assist the bride and her party.

Photography

Photographs may be taken before and after the ceremony but may not be taken during the wedding itself. Following the ceremony, the wedding party may return to the sanctuary or chapel. If the service is to be recorded on video the camera must be located on a tripod in an inconspicuous area of the sanctuary or the chapel.

Decoration

While decorations are proper, they should be kept within the bounds of simplicity and good taste, enhancing the quiet beauty of the sanctuary and chapel. All equipment, such as candelabra, baskets, etc. should be furnished by the florist or families. Protective coverings shall be placed under all standing candelabra, with every precaution made against possible fire. The communion table and appointments should not be removed. Please do not block the view of the organist. No tacks or staples are to be used. Decorators should see that all decorating materials and debris are removed from the sanctuary and chapel at the conclusion of the wedding service. A kneeling bench is available.

Reception Facilities

The fellowship hall and kitchen facilities are available for receptions. The church will furnish long tables for receptions. Caterers will provide other items, according to the bride's preference. Protective coverings shall be placed under all standing candelabra with every precaution made against possible fire. If a couple chooses not to have a reception with refreshments, a simple receiving line may be formed in the church narthex. The use of alcohol in any form is forbidden in the building. Church facilities are smoke free.

Additional Policies

Bird seed may be thrown outside the building on grass-covered areas. This is for personal safety of the wedding party and guests as well as for property maintenance. Rice must not be thrown. Since the church does not provide a room for valuable items delivered to the church preceding the wedding, the church will not be liable for any items that are lost, stolen, or damaged.

Since its founding in 1921, one of the great strengths of the First Christian Church of Decatur has been its dynamic music ministry. Music is an important part of worship at The First Christian Church of Decatur, and there are many opportunities available for you to explore the gifts and talents the Lord has given you. A love and desire to give God your best are all that are required for you to use your musical ability to minister to others. We encourage you and your family to take full advantage of our church’s rich musical heritage and to join us in the study and making of beautiful music. It will change your life and heighten your worship experience. The First Christian Church of Decatur has a Chancel Choir and a Handbell Choir. A highlight of the Advent season is the musically-rich Chrismon Service. The First Christian Church of Decatur also houses The Decatur Music Academy.

Chancel Choir

The Chancel Choir is open to all who wish to serve in the main service choir for the 10:50 a.m. worship service. Members are asked to commit themselves to regular attendance at weekly rehearsals, Sunday services and occasional special events. Extra rehearsals are held when special events are near, but these are kept to a minimum and are scheduled well in advance. Childcare is regularly provided for Chancel Choir events. Rehearsals are scheduled on Wednesday evening from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.. Contact the director, William E. Handbells

The Decatur Music Academy

Chrismon Service

The First Christian Church of Decatur warmly and cordially invites you to attend and participate in our 2010 Chrismon Service. Like the three kings presenting gifts to Jesus, we will present our offering in the form of Chrismons on December 5, 2010 at 5:00pm. The First Christian Church of Decatur has had the privilege and honor of celebrating the seasons of Advent and Christmas during its Chrismon Service for over 35 years. It is our hope that you join in the celebration and this long time tradition. Introduction to Chrismons At Christmas, not only does the star lead us to Bethlehem, but also to Nazareth, Galilee, Capernaum, Jerusalem, Calvary, and Heaven. For as part of Jesus’ birth, we also celebrate His life and ministry, His death and resurrection, and His ultimate victory over the powers of sin and death. Like the three kings, we present our gifts to Jesus and to one another. Today we will present our offering in the form of Chrismon. "Chrismon" is a combination of two words: CHRISt and MONogram. A Chrismon is a symbol of Christ. Christian symbols date back to the early church. They are found on the walls of the Roman catacombs, on Jewelry and utensils from excavations in Palestine and elsewhere. Early Christians used them to identify themselves to one another, to designate meeting places, and sometimes to show seekers symbols of their faith. These symbols of the early church served to transmit the faith and beliefs of the followers of Jesus Christ. Chrismons were first used in 1957 to decorate a Christmas tree in the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, Virginia. They were composed of white and gold materials. White is symbolic of our Lord’s purity and perfection. Gold is representative of God’s majesty, glory and triumph. The green balsam is symbolic of promised healing. The little white lights on the tree point to the Christ as the light of the world. Each Chrismon is described in Scripture and refers to some aspect of Jesus Christ. As the particular Scripture passage is read, the person with the Chrismon will bring it forward, where it will be placed on the Chrismon Tree. The congregation will read responsively the meaning of the symbols. Christian Youth Fellowship

AA / Alcoholics Anonymous - Ponce de Leon Group TIME: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM, each Tuesday evening LOCATION: Church Fellowship Hall Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Narcotics Anonymous TIME: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM, each Sunday evening LOCATION: Church Fellowship Hall Membership is open to all drug addicts, regardless of the particular drug or combination of drugs used. When adapting AA’s First Step, the word “addiction” was substituted for “alcohol,” thus removing drug-specific language and reflecting the “disease concept” of addiction. There are no social, religious, economic, racial, ethnic, national, gender, or class-status membership restrictions. There are no dues or fees for membership; while most members regularly contribute small sums to help cover the expenses of meetings, such contributions are not mandatory. Narcotics Anonymous provides a recovery process and support network inextricably linked together. One of the keys to NA’s success is the therapeutic value of addicts working with other addicts. Members share their successes and challenges in overcoming active addiction and living drug-free productive lives through the application of the principles contained within the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of NA. These principles are the core of the Narcotics Anonymous recovery program. Principles incorporated within the steps include:

admitting there is a problem;
seeking help;
engaging in a thorough self-examination;
confidential self-disclosure;
making amends for harm done; and
helping other drug addicts who want to recover.

Central to the Narcotics Anonymous program is its emphasis on practicing spiritual principles. Narcotics Anonymous itself is non-religious, and each member is encouraged to cultivate an individual understanding—religious or not—of this “spiritual awakening.” Narcotics Anonymous is not affiliated with other organizations, including other twelve step programs, treatment centers, or correctional facilities. As an organization, NA does not employ professional counselors or therapists nor does it provide residential facilities or clinics. Additionally, the fellowship does not provide vocational, legal, financial, psychiatric, or medical services. NA has only one mission: to provide an environment in which addicts can help one another stop using drugs and find a new way to live. In Narcotics Anonymous, members are encouraged to comply with complete abstinence from all drugs including alcohol. It has been the experience of NA members that complete and continuous abstinence provides the best foundation for recovery and personal growth. NA as a whole has no opinion on outside issues, including prescribed medications. Use of psychiatric medication and other medically indicated drugs prescribed by a physician and taken under medical supervision is not seen as compromising a person’s recovery in NA. Aid to Children of Imprisoned Mothers, Inc. (AIM) A community-based organization that works with children of incarcerated women, their mothers and their caregivers, who are primarily maternal grandmothers. AIM works intensively with 100 children over a long period to allow for complete investment in the entire family. The Disciples Women is a supporter of AIM.

Decatur Cooperative Ministries (DCM) DCM was founded in 1969 and has been actively involved in serving the Decatur/DeKalb area ever since. It operates a transitional housing program for homeless, employed families as well as an emergency shelter for women with children. Additionally, it works to prevent homelessness by providing assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, and food. Numerous volunteer opportunities are available for youth and adults. Hagar’s House provides up to 30 nights of emergency shelter and support services for women with children. The facility, which operates only at night, can accommodate up to 30 guests per evening, and each family enjoys a private room and bath. While residing at Hagar’s House, families receive housing, two meals per day, laundry facilities, limited transportation assistance, resources and referrals, computer training opportunities, and other services as needed.

Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry (D.E.A.M.) The purpose of DEAM is to meet the emergency needs of persons through ministry in the Spirit of Christ. DEAM provides emergency assistance (including rent, utilities and food) to Decatur area residents. Volunteers are needed for the food pantry each month. DEAM is open Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. To contact DEAM, please call 404-373-2300.

Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes and the goodnews of God's love. Contact the Disciples Women for more information.

Total Family and Children's Services Formerly known as Columbia Community Connection, this Disciples sponsored organization provides mothers and fathers of DeKalb County and surrounding communities with information, skills, training, and resources that will enhance their ability to build and maintain safe, healthy, and productive families; and to aid in the prevention of child abuse, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and educational failure.

Ronald McDonald House To provide a temporary home-away-from-home for families who must come to Atlanta-area children's hospitals to have their children treated for cancer and other serious illnesses or injuries.

Leave a Living Legacy

Some of us may have had the opportunity to see or read about the exhibition of King Tutankham’s treasures. The body of the Egyptian king was sealed in a large tomb with his riches for over 30 centuries. From 1324 BCE until 1922 AD, King Tut’s body and wealth was in the dark in an airless chamber. When his tomb was discovered and opened, King Tutankhamen’s body had decomposed, but the gold and alabaster had kept their substance and form. They glitter and please the human eye as well as ever. It was the objects and not the man that rose again. Is this not an image for us? What is to be our legacy? What legacy does the Holy Spirit envision for you? Jesus gifted us with a parable, saying: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.” (Luke 12: 16-21) The farmer in Jesus’ parable had the blessed problem of a bumper crop, of an unexpected abundance, and when he discovers it the only soul he consults is his own. He asks himself, “What should I do?” Surprise, surprise, the same source provides an answer: keep the surplus for the self-centered trinity of me, myself, and I. Now, let us be fair: there is no indication that the farmer in the parable earned his goods in an unjust way or with unfair practices. The challenge before him – and us – is not in how he grew extra crops on his land, but in his lack of concern for those in need in his midst. His long term vision went no further than his hands could grasp. Ancient wisdom teaches that wealth must be shared with those in need because the resources of the land and the community are limited. Ancient wisdom, the kind of wise teachings that influenced prophets, shamans, priests, and elders, says that if goods are limited, one person’s hoarding sets in motion a relational dynamic that takes away from others. This parable is about the misuse of goods and property, the hoarding of wealth and resources, the idolatrous worship of things and possessions we call greed. Paul wrote in 1 Timothy that the “love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” Jesus the Christ spoke to the people of God, saying: “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” In the comic strip The Wizard of Id, the priest asks the king, “Sire, of all the major sins, which do you consider to be number one?” “Well, said the king, “they are all bad, but I like greed the best.” This famous truth is found not only in comics but also in the Holy Scriptures. Greed has been a sin of choice from biblical times to today. As Jesus tells the parable, God addresses the content, happy farmer. “You fool! This night your soul is required of you, and all these extra goods and grains you have stored, whose will they be?” When it comes to human greed, God intervenes. God cares about those in need in our midst, and has the blessed audacity to expect us to care, as well. King Tut blew it. We don’t have to repeat his history. Every single day and night we have opportunities to prepare a living legacy. The Scriptures point us toward being rich in the ways of God. Consult the Word for guidance in your life. Consider the needs of your brothers and sisters in your midst. Commit your treasure and time and talent to building up the community. Remember the church in your will. Remember that “where your treasure is, your heart will be there as well.” (Matthew 6: 21) Leave a fabulous legacy that gives glory to God and far exceeds the reach of your outstretched hands. Practical and spiritual basics for building a healthy relationship

I am grateful that these first 25 years of pastoral ministry have afforded me ample opportunities to be a part of people’s lives in times of joy and tragedy, monotony and transformation. One such opportunity has been marital counseling (beforehand, during, and, yes, afterward) and aiding familial relationships. Here are some practical and spiritual basics for building a healthy relationship, some of which I draw upon during confidential pastoral counseling with couples from all ages, stages, and walks of life. I offer these insights to you and yours free of charge and in no particular order. Enjoy! Common denominators matter. When picking a mate, aim for common denominators that are important to you. No two people are exactly alike -- vive la différence! -- yet it sure helps to have as many things in common with your mate as possible, which in turn enables the overcoming of life’s challenges which may (and do) arise. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Communication is the key to a healthy and meaningful relationship. Express yourself. Share with your beloved what you need to have understood. Ask your companion, “How are you?” and then listen to what is said (and for what is withheld). Turn off the distractions and make the effort to listen. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. (Ephesians 4: 26) This is really good advice. Before going to sleep at night make sure to resolve all disputes, jealousies, and problems so that when you wake up the next morning it is truly a new day and everyone gets a fresh start. Practice daily the art of forgiveness. Accept the hard reality that your way is not always the right or only way. Besides, would you rather be right or reconciled? Accept each other as is. The only person you can change in the world is (drum roll, please) yourself. Allow God’s transforming power to go to work in your soul, and one day you may witness your mate growing and evolving as well. Have something bigger than yourselves in your home. Honestly, my friends, evening meals are really boring for families who have nothing to talk about except work, kids, and TV. Connect your family to God and a local faith community. Start now; don’t wait until some magical, mythical point in the distant future. Tithe your talent, treasure and time to the faith community in which you are participating, and I can promise you that you will reap what you sow. Pick your battles. Life is too short and precious to be spent bickering or complaining or whining. Decide together to not fight or argue about every little thing. Choose what really matters, and then let go of the rest. Intimacy and sex are wonderful gifts of God. Be faithful; practice fidelity. Sex is not something to be used as a weapon; it isn’t meant to be a bargaining chip. You should be able to ask your mate for whatever your heart, body and soul desires. At the same time, whenever you do ask, make sure you are prepared to respect your mate’s decision and response, regardless of whether the answer is yes, no, or maybe later. Human sensuality and sexual intimacy are divine gifts which feel good and can sustain affection, create new life, heal hurts, heighten closeness, and enable reconciliation. Make a financial plan and then stick to it. Money issues are a major source of strife for many couples. Again, communicate with one another. You have heard it said, “Plan your work and then work your plan.” Talk it out and work together to cope with whatever financial issues you may be encountering. Keep your tithe alive no matter what because giving to charity is a tangible response to grace and a daily reminder that we are blessed by a providential God and bound to one another. Have fun. Vision for 2010-11: Living Inside Out

“The best way to predict the future is to help create it.”

Christians multitask. As you know, Jesus’ followers need to be flexible because we’re often required to handle more than one thing at a time. For example, we function well with a variety of calendars. First, there is the Gregorian calendar year, with which we are most familiar; then there is the business-centered fiscal year, which can be either July-to-June or January-to-December; and finally there is the liturgical calendar, which is influenced by the vernal equinox and incorporates the six liturgical seasons which constitute a church year. Christianity’s liturgical year begins on the first day of Advent (which is coming up on Sunday, November 28), and then moves through Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. These six seasons serve as a beautiful way for people to learn, remember, and share the story of God’s love for all of creation. This is one of the ways the Holy Spirit works through the church to weave together theology, history, liturgy and worship, and the Holy Bible into a fabric that we can hold onto as we seek divine direction for the human condition. Christians prepare. We plan our work and work our plan, as inspired and informed by the Messiahship, mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. Here is the beginning of a vision for First Christian Church of Decatur as framed by the liturgical year, starting with Advent and moving through the conclusion of Pentecost in late 2011. This vision comes to us through our communal connection with the Holy Spirit and in prayerful, direct response to our church leadership’s desire for spiritual direction and guidance, which is what I, your pastor, have been called to offer and provide, with the help of God. Christians live inside out. Good News! The faith we affirm has already been planted deep inside. Hopefully, by tapping into the Spirit that resides within and drawing it ever outward, we will evolve, change, and be transformed; the resulting new life in Christ shall generate good will and positive energies that, in turn, may increase the church in spirit, mission, and people. Fostering spiritual formation calls for our collective focus as a congregation for the next 12 months to be: faithfully and intentionally pray and meditate; study and embody the Holy Scriptures; and engage in the spiritual disciplines. Christians organize. The community organizer in me acknowledges that communities are already organized; therefore the organizer’s responsibility is to work with and within existing structures and relationships in order to channel people’s energies, sense of will, and resources toward the fulfillment of a common cause. My friends, our common cause is to build the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. We begin and continue the journey by living faithfully, from the inside out. Advent (Season of Anticipation and Preparation) This Advent we eagerly await God’s blessed surprise, as foretold by the prophets and anticipated by a people in need of healing and hope. The church will be encouraged to name and cherish the ways and means that God’s love has been a blessed surprise. In what ways are you the surprise the world is waiting for? How can the church surprise the world? We prepare for the birth of God’s love in the world with special services of worship, creative gifts of kindness, acts of generous hospitality, and interacting with our neighbors and one another while selling Christmas trees, making wreaths, practicing hospitality, and encountering the holy in surprising places and faces. Christmas (Season of Birth and Joy) Christmas is set aside to celebrate that the Earth and the Transcendent have meet in the Child of God born in Bethlehem. Let the Lord be born (again!) in you and in our church and city. The church will be invited to contemplate and celebrate God’s decisive, loving action to save the world. Even though decorations and gift wrapping paper have been put away, now is the time to give thanks and quietly, gratefully, joyfully dedicate our lives to one fully human in whom God is fully present: Emmanuel, God with us. Epiphany (Season of Celebration of Jesus’ Manifestation as the Messiah) This is a season of recognition. People recognized that Jesus was the Messiah at his baptism, at a wedding in Cana, and in his preaching, teaching, and healing works. The church is instructed to pause and recognize the holy in our midst. During January we will participate in a month-long experience of rest, renewal and recovery. Our worship services will be uplifting and strengthening. Starting on January 15 (MLK Day) and ending on April 24 (Easter), we will share in 100 days of prayer. Everyone who chooses to join in this spiritual practice will be divided into triplets (groups of three); each triplet will be asked to commit to pray together 10 times in 100 days. We seek to discern and discover afresh God’s will for us personally and communally. Lent (Season of Preparation and Repentance) This is a season set aside to focus on the spiritual disciplines. We seek to overcome whatever comes between us and God and one another. The church will be united with a heightened devotion to community service and self-sacrifice. We will offer opportunities for a mission trip, local and regional outreach ministries, and cross-cultural, intergenerational experiences to help make faith tangible. May our Lenten confessions and contrite hearts lead us to be active in good deeds for the sake of the Gospel. Easter (Season of Redemption and Salvation) This is a season that celebrates the spring time of life, of rebirth, renewal and resurrection. We are in awe of the sacrifice of God’s Son so we might experience forgiveness and receive the gift of life everlasting. The church will be invited to look within and to look around, asking, “What needs to be let go in order for something new to be raised up? How can I (we) best be a part of God’s plan for the renewal of the human condition?” We may decide to offer another spring carnival, which is a fine way to have fun, interact with our neighbors, and fund a church mission. Pentecost (Season of the Gift of the Spirit for the Building of the Church) This is a season that begins with the church’s birthday celebration, lifting up the gift of the Holy Spirit. With this power from on high, Christians have the inner strength to nurture the growth of the church. Pentecost lasts for 26 weeks, giving us the time necessary to concentrate on building up the Body of Christ. The church will be invited to explore the variety of expressions of the Spirit, as well as learning how best to embody the ministry that Jesus had begun. We’ve prayed in triplets and small groups, in our homes and in worship. What have been some of the answers to our prayers? Is now the time to invest ourselves in fleshing out the Word? How do you live out the love that is given to you? Who is within your reach that needs to be loved? Surely this is the season to act on God’s commission: serve one another as Christ first served us.

Two Thoughts on the Social Net at Work

Thought One Ruth was at work recently when she sneezed. A colleague who sits near her said, “Gesundheit” to which she replied, “Danke.” Then up on her computer screen popped a message. It said, “Bless you.” The message was from another colleague who had heard her sneeze from far down the hall. I love that story because Ruth was socially connected to the person by her side as well as the one down the hall. One chose to communicate God’s blessings verbally and the other over Skype. What a world. When I was in the cell phone store recently a father of a 16-year-old girl was aghast over his bill. Apparently his daughter had sent 13,000 text messages…in one month. By the time he walked out the door he had changed her phone account to “unlimited texts.” I wondered if maybe he needed to sit her down and ask “Why?” and possibly “When?” Fred Craddock tells the story of paying a visit on an elderly farmer. As they sat and talked in the farmer’s home the phone began to ring. It rang and rang. Finally Fred asked, “Are you going to get that?” The farmer said, “I put the phone in for my convenience.” Meaning, you and our conversation are more important to me than anything else. Have you ever thought about our infatuation with immediate gratification, and how instant communication feeds our need? Make some time to reflect on whether your use of social networks is healthy for you. Is it a tool that you can walk away from and not miss? Do you have an addiction to it, meaning that you have unhealthy cravings and obsession when away even for a little while? As you know, computers and phone screens lack two essential elements in sustaining the human condition: touch and tone. We need to feel and sense one another’s presence, and we need to hear the tone of human speech in order to grasp nuance and emotion. Both touch and tone communicate far more than any text or tweet! Thought Two Don’t get me wrong. I see much good in humans connecting with one another. The purpose of religion is to connect us to God and one another. I am all in favor of human communication and interaction. And now we have a new blessing via the social network (a form of instant communication that is enabled by internet access and lightening quick tools). The Net has tapped into a new sense of purpose: catalyst. Consider the sudden, recent geopolitical changes in the Middle East. The people of Tunisia had had it up to here with their repressive regime. The late Fannie Lou Hamer’s words would fit here. Tunisians were “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Fed up with their tyrannical government, inspired by hope, and connected by social networks via the internet, the people began to meet. Messages received told them where to meet on the street and protest for social change. Motivated by words on touch screens and cell phones, Tunisians poured out of their homes, schools and shops to march and stand up for freedom, knowing full well that they were risking life and limb, arrest and death. Literally within days the ruling party made for a smooth transition and future elections, and then simply walked away. Tunisia was liberated. The seeds sown over the internet social networks of Facebook and Twitter, texts and blogs moved like the wind across the Middle East. Egypt caught on and within a few weeks the 30-year regime of Mubarak, despite his power and protestations, was overthrown. The winds of freedom still blow across the desert sand. Keep your eyes on the brave people of Iran, Jordan, and elsewhere around the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Look toward the horizon. When will the people of Myanmar (nee Burma) rise up? Are Tweets of freedom filtering across North Korea? Can you imagine a new uprising in Tiananmen Square in China? Whenever and wherever divine winds of freedom start to blow, with God nothing is impossible. My friends, use the social networks at your disposal to spread the Good News that freedom has its roots in the love of God. Genesis opens the Bible with the inspiring language of freedom from nothingness. In the beginning the breath, the wind, the ruach of God swept across the seas and lands and breathed new life into the world. You and I know this wind, this breath, this Spirit. We are witnesses of the winds of liberation, winds which have always blown across the land and seas, mountains and deserts, inviting oppressed and downtrodden peoples to lift up their voices and stride toward freedom. The litany of freedom movements is long and inspiring, as are the root causes that led to the oppression of God’s people the world over. Our nation was populated by people who fled tyranny, and then we gained independence by overthrowing a tyrant. Our nation was also populated by peoples brought here in chains and sold into slavery, and it would take a bloody civil war before freedom was gained. Within the last four generations alone we have witnessed the uprising of the disenfranchised in India in the 30s and 40s; the Civil Rights Movement here in the 50s and 60s; and in the succeeding decades we saw people’s power explode in the Philippines, South Africa, and West Germany, dramatized by the toppling of the Berlin Wall and then the USSR. While standing in the shanties and slums of Jamaica, the Wailers (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer) boldly lifted up for their people songs that spoke of liberation. They used their voices and radio airwaves as their social network, singing, Exodus, movement of Jah people Exodus, movement of Jah people Jah come to break down 'pression, rule equality Wipe away transgression, set the captives free Whether you know the one true God by the name of Jah (short for Yahweh) or Allah or Lord Almighty, what matters most is that you connect socially with the one truly divine Networker who has the power to liberate. God breaks down oppression. God rules with equality and grace, is slow to anger and quick to forgive. God wipes away our confessed transgressions and sets us free to be, you and me. Amen! And what happens when this message is spread amongst a people who have known only repression and rejection? The Word has the power to unite and bring hope. Better than Bowling: Fellowship of Prayer

“Through prayer, meditative reflection on scripture, and community worship, we as Christians discover the paths of our faithfulness.” – David and Kaye Edwards, Fellowship of Prayer, 1994 On February 2, 2011, in the Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt, Christian Egyptians formed a wide circle and held hands, facing outward, to protect their Muslim neighbors as they knelt in prayer. Four days later, when Coptic Christians held a mass in the same square as a show of solidarity with the antigovernment protesters, the Christians were protected in like manner by Muslims. Last autumn a pastor in Gainesville, Florida made plans to publicly burn the Qur’an. The international protests that were sparked ignited local Christians and Muslims to begin to meet in interfaith gatherings. They prayed together, pleaded with the pastor to cease and desist from his plans, and, as a long term result, formed a coalition of 25 faith communities to study the Scriptures, share meals, and sponsor a Habitat for Humanity build. Praying together works. Study your Holy Scriptures and you will see that no matter what your walk of faith, it is our Creator who teaches us to pray. The One who created and creates wills for us to communicate with the holy and with one another. Unlike any other form of communication, the act of praying has the power to connect us with God; prayer has the unique capacity to connect us with each other. This week in the Christian Century we read, “People who attend religious services regularly and build friendships within their congregation indicate higher levels of satisfaction with their lives, according to a Faith Matters survey of American adults conducted from 2006 to 2007. Strength of religious convictions and private religious practices such as prayer do not by themselves indicate higher levels of satisfaction. What matters is a strong sense of religious identity and belonging and the forging of friendships within one’s faith community. ‘It is neither faith nor communities, per se, that are important, but communities of faith,’ report the authors of the study. ‘For life satisfaction, praying together seems to be better than either bowling together or praying alone.’” [American Sociological Review, Dec. 2010) Prayer draws us together with God. Julian of Norwich put it best, saying, “Prayer oneth the soul to God.” Prayer draws us together with one another. There is nothing haphazard or accidental about the fact that our church gatherings begin and end with prayer; that our worship services are interspersed with prayers spoken and sung and offered in silence; that for the next three months we are going to meet in triplets (groups of three) ten times for the sole (soul!) purpose to pray. At Emory University, Professor Tom Long preached a sermon that pointed out a difference between receiving counseling from a secular therapist and a pastor. When a session is over, the therapist will pull out a calendar to set up the next appointment, while your pastor will pray with you, invoking the presence of God to watch over you while you are apart, one from the other. Do You Wonder Where She Learned That?

A few years ago a storm dislodged a number of tree branches which fell into our backyard. My family hauled arm loads of branches to the front yard, where they were cut and piled to be picked up by city services. A bright sound caught our attention. We looked up to see a smiling Katie, age nine, walking toward the front yard holding a single, tiny green branch high above her head, thrusting it into the air to emphasize her words, saying, “Hosanna! Hosanna!” Do you wonder where she learned that? Each year on Palm Sunday our children help lead the congregation in a litany of blessings, praising God and repeating after the worship leader, “Hosanna! Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! God save us! God saves all people! The Red! The Black! The White! The Yellow! The Gay! The Straight! The Rich! The Poor! All People! God save us! Hosanna!” This year in preparation for Palm Sunday, Laura Andrew was asked to invite us during the context of worship to consider giving money toward missions and new church starts in the USA and around the world. She shared with us in worship that she had been wrestling with what to say and how to express herself. She told us that the night before she had been sharing her concerns with her family. Suddenly her 10-year-old granddaughter Sarah left the room. Sarah returned a few minutes later and handed her grandmother a small notebook with a poem she had just written to be used as the invitation to faithful stewardship. After Laura read the poem to us in church, we were so moved you could have heard a pin drop. $379 was donated over and above our tithes for the Easter Offering. Here is Sarah’s poem, transcribed as originally written: “The poor the pain of the loving humans they shall suffer they go trew many times of pain diying of the few no water no food no health scrapes of clothing. They have poor shelter Let us help the poor together we can change this a beautiful land. Donate monny to help the poor. God bless you.” --Sarah Bowman, 10 Do you wonder how where she learned that? You will not be surprised when I tell you that Sarah is being raised in a loving family who love God and Christ’s Church. There is a direct connection between being raised in a Christ-centered environment and learning how to feel and express empathy and serve with compassion. Just before our Palm Sunday worship service started, Paul Brown informed me he was planning to join First Christian Church of Decatur. Yes! I asked him to write in letters large enough for me to read exactly what he wanted me to tell the congregation about him. After the sermon, I issued an invitation for anyone who was so moved to come forward and join the church by transfer of membership, confession of faith, or by renewal of the vows of baptism. Paul and Mark walked forward. (Mark is an active church member and Deacon.) Paul handed me his note card. I read his introduction silently and decided to share it aloud. He wrote and I said, “Paul is the Partner of Mark Ranney. He’s already saved, was kicked out of his former church in the past, and wants to reclaim his calling to his faith and to the church.” After sharing this with the congregation, I told Paul that we have all been hurt; therefore we are Christ’s hospital of healing and hope. As I extended to him the right hand of Christian fellowship, I offered that we look forward to growing in faith and mission alongside him and his partner Mark and especially to hearing them sing together in the Chancel Choir on Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, the following conversation was held in a church pew between the Rev. Daphne Reiley and her daughter Amelia, age 9-and-a-half. Amelia asked, “Why did they kick him out of his church?” Daphne responded that most likely it was because he is gay. “Oh,” Amelia responded, “why would they do that?” Amelia was fairly incredulous that a church would kick somebody out for who they loved. Worship Liturgies for the Whole People of God

Dear Friends, Greetings! I do hope you are well. For the past ten years or so I have been blessed to serve on behalf of the church as a regular contributor of sermons to the Biblical Preaching Journal and original liturgies for the Journal of Worship Resources (Deerhaven Press). Sadly, like many fine magazines, the Biblical Preaching Journal is no longer in publication; happily the Journal of Worship Resources continues to publish seasonal issues for congregations around the world. Below is a “free sample” of liturgies I wrote for the Lent and Easter 2011 issue of JWR for this upcoming Sunday, May 22. The central Bible text is Acts 7: 55-60 (the stoning of Stephen). You are welcome to participate in this Sunday’s services as we contemplate in the context of worship what the Christian faith has to say to victims, assailants, and the human condition. The sermon is entitled “Stones.” Please stay afterward and be our guest for a church and community potluck meal. Come, and be fed body and soul. As always, First Christian Church of Decatur, I am delighted to be your pastor. Shalom, James Brewer-Calvert Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16) One: In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me. Many: Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me. One: You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead me and guide me, take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge. Many: Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. One: My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors. Many: Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love. Amen! Unison Prayer of Invocation Lord, into your hand we commit our spirits. Accept us as we are and make of us disciples of your Son and our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen! Call to Confession Stephen looked up into the heavens and saw God. Excitedly he told those near him what he witnessed. “’Look,’ Stephen said, ‘I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’ But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him.” (Acts 7: 56-57) Ever had your own enthusiasm thwarted by someone else’s anger? Or have you covered your ears and refused to listen to someone else’s excitement and joy in seeing God? Has anyone prejudged you and hurt your feelings? Ever rush to judgment? How about shouting down or striking out at someone whom you think opposes you? Let us confess our sins of hastiness. Let us apologize for when we’ve used loud words or raised fists or weapons to dominate without concern for the harm we cause. Let us turn to the one who receives and reconciles our spirits with an eye toward justice and mercy. Prayer of Confession Lord, do not hold this sin against us. Forgive us, we beseech you. Cleanse our souls and send us forth with a clearer sense of our connectedness with you and one another. May our lips offer praise instead of put downs. May we unclench our fists and extend hands of hope. May we open our eyes to see the holy in all our relationships. In your name we pray. Amen. Call to Offering Econ 101: If you and I give what we gave last year, we will give less than we did last year. If we give what we gave ten years ago, we're giving about half of what we gave then. The language of tithing is not the language of final arrival, but of growth. You and I need to give. Our church needs to receive in order to fulfill God’s mission. Please, let each one of us support Christ’s church with our generosity. Prayer for Offering Please bless these gifts, God, for what they will accomplish in your name, and because each gift is a sacrifice, a show of support, and a tangible sign of faithful stewardship. Amen. Call to Communion The Bible tells us in Acts 7: 58 that after Stephen saw the heavens open, “they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; …the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.” Years later Saul was still persecuting Christians when the heavens opened and God appeared to him on the road to Damascus. God said, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9: 4) Struck blind and then ministered to by Christians until his sight returned, Saul changed his name to Paul, committed his soul to Christ, and began a mission of starting faith communities. After Jesus Christ, for better or for worse, no one has been more influential in the church than Paul. There is much for us to learn from this, including the Good News that no matter what our past, God and God’s people are fully committed to changing our present for the sake of the future. Come as you are, regardless of your yesterdays, and have faith that God is nigh. See, the heavens are open and Jesus stands at the right hand of God! Benediction The heavens are open! The Son of God rejoices in your worship and praise. The Lord receives with joy your spirit and your commitment. Now go out into the world to be and share the Good News. Amen!

(Here is a reprint of my “Focus” column in our church newsletter, published 10 years ago immediately after the tragedies and terror of September 11, 2001. Updated comments are in italics.) My 15-year-old niece, Ana, is a student at Stuyvesant High School in downtown New York near Battery Park. During first period Ana glanced up from her desk and saw smoke pouring out of the top of the World Trade Center. The principle spoke over the intercom to announce that a plane had accidentally struck the WTC. Ana went with her classmates to their next classes. She looked up again and watched in horror as a second airplane smashed into the other tower. Within the next hour she witnessed both towers come crashing down. Buildings which took six years to build were felled in less than two hours. As Ana’s public high school became a public triage in response to the emergency, the principle released the students to go home to safety. Ana and some friends walked north up the west side of Manhattan to 81^stStreet, a hike of about five miles, and then she called David, her father and my eldest brother. He picked them up and took them home. Meanwhile Teresa, David’s wife, was evacuated from her office in one of the United Nations buildings. Teresa immediately walked over to Hunter High School and collected Daniel, my 13-year-old nephew, and together they went to David and Teresa’s home on 105^th Street near Broadway. (Later that evening we learned that our beloved friend Sharon Balkcom had been killed when the first plane struck her office on the 95^th floor.) This is one story of millions across America. A land of people from many faiths and backgrounds, we are drawn together as one in our grief, anger, horror, gratitude, and hope. We grieve for all the victims and their families. We are angry at the perpetrators and the violent mindset of anyone who intentionally seeks to harm innocent people. We are horrified at the magnitude of the catastrophe, and in our need to make sense of it we liken it to Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima, horrific bombings which bookend America’s participation in World War II. We are grateful to God for our friends and family members who survived; for those who, knowingly or unknowingly, gave their lives; and for those who make sacrifices for neighbors in ways great and small. We keep alive a deep and abiding hope for the day when the Kingdom of God shall reign on earth as it does in Heaven. My friends, here are three responses to the tragedy of the attack on America. First, keep your eyes on the helpers. It is tempting to focus on the perpetrators, but let us keep our focus on those who walk into the smoke to rescue and save. I grew up with an athletic, bright friend in our Church of the Living Hope’s youth group named Jimmy Cintron. Jimmy became an energetic, committed firefighter in the Bronx. I am positive Jimmy is in the midst of NY’s flames and ashes and rescue efforts. (Indeed, NY Fireman Cintron was there; he worked nonstop for over 48 hours at Ground Zero.) Secondly, leave revenge to the Lord. It is most tempting to want to strike out at those who do evil. Evil is spiritual, it is alive, and it is real. We are in a spiritual war with evil, and it is certainly understandable that many of us are filled with self-righteousness for our cause, and many believe that revenge is justifiable. Must more innocent people die to appease our anger? My prayer is that we not lower our ethics to the level of those who do evil, but rather that we demonstrate the highest forms of social responsibility, accountability, fairness, and justice. It is our responsibility to bring the catch to Christ, and to let Christ do the cleaning. Third, pray to the God of grace. I heard a young man on television say he did not know why God did this, but that God must have a reason. Sir, the God I know and love and follow does not send tragedies or trials, temptations or terror. My God is not cruel. The God I follow is a constant help in times of pain and trouble. You see, suffering and death are neutral. What is not neutral is our response. When faced with suffering and death, we make a choice by how we respond. Do we serve the devil or God? Do we serve the forces of evil by giving in or giving up, or do we serve the God of love by carrying forth the best of the spirits of those who died and move forward with faith and hope? Rather than seeing the Holy Spirit as a force to blame, turn now to the Spirit for strength and sustenance. I resolve to be a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. I resolve to build up a better church to glorify God. I resolve to teach peace and work for justice. I resolve to work and play alongside you, my friends, as we build up the kingdom of God, with the help of Jesus Christ. (I continue to act on that same resolve, with the help of God. Join with me and our neighbors at a 9-11 Interfaith Gathering at the Decatur Hotel and Conference Center on Sunday, September 11, 2011, at 5PM. True Religion

My three brothers and I do not hang up the phone or conclude a conversation with each other before we have talked sports. Same story with my son in college. On more than one occasion my mother has pointed out that our true religion is baseball. Fellow believers, this autumn is shaping up to be a great one for Georgia. The Atlanta Braves are a sure bet to be in the mix in October. “Sports Illustrated” writer Peter King predicts that the Atlanta Falcons will make it all the way to the Super Bowl. The WNBA Atlanta Dream started their season mired in last place, yet are now setting their sites on the playoffs. Are you like me, digging the UGA Dawgs’ chances in ‘11 with QB Murray under center? If anyone has a handle on Georgia Tech football, please let me know. One thing we do know: the SEC rules the roost when it comes to college football; in January an SEC East team will be #1. As fun as it is to contemplate shiny trophies resting on shelves here in Georgia, I am going to miss some of the action...live, that is. My home recorder will be working overtime this fall, taping great games for later viewing while I practice, alongside you and yours, my really, truly favorite religion. Ah, sacrifice! The purpose of religion is to connect people with God and with one another. What do you think is the difference between being a fan and a follower? To what degree is sacrifice a factor? We also have access to 10+ foot trees as a special order. If you pre-ordered, the order will be available for pick up after 3pm on Monday, November 28.

Do I Look Like Trayvon?

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!” -- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. You and I were not there the evening that Mr. Trayvon Martin and Mr. George Zimmerman encountered one another on a residential street in Florida. We do not know everything that was said, or done, or what transpired. Our information is limited to news reports and the “he said, she said” of the media and social network rumor mills. But there are some things that we do know. We do know that wearing a hoodie is not a crime that is punishable by death. We do know that walking down a street after returning from a store with a package of Skittles is not just cause for being shot and killed. We do know that when harsh or fearful words are exchanged, when a scuffle breaks out, when a punch is thrown, when a shove is delivered that such actions are not offenses which justify murder. We do know that we should “not be judged by the color of [our] skin but by the content of [our] character.” We do know that too often we allow prejudice and misunderstanding to impair our judgment and unity; too easily do we give license for our fears to erupt in violence. We do know that there are alternatives to violence. We grieve as one nation because two families are in turmoil and pain, and needlessly so. Two lives need not have been so drastically changed and damaged that evening in Florida. Alternative means for resolving conflict, disagreement, and fearful situations were – and are -- available. As a matter of fact, one could make the point and choose to live life with the belief that there is always an alternative to violence. John Lennon said, “What is so funny about peace, love, and understanding?” Later Lennon sang, “All we are saying is give peace a chance.” Let’s put an end to senseless violence by beginning with the only people we can control: ourselves. Do everything in your power to give peace a fighting chance and to actively pursue and learn alternatives to violence; only then will we ever learn whether true peace is possible. These are violent times; they need not be so. Our Holy Week experience of the saving, reconciling love of Christ is intermingled with mind-boggling senseless violence and mind-blowing sensible love. On Maundy Thursday, our community of faith will gather together as Jesus did with his followers in the Upper Room. We’ll break bread together; we’ll sing psalms and pray together; and then we will sit together while contemplating the choice Jesus made for our sake: to allow himself to be cruelly crucified so that we might be redeemed and experience the hope of salvation. On Good Friday we’ll remember that he was, indeed, crucified an innocent martyr at the hands of people who used violence in their effort to control and oppress. We’ll sit at the base of the Cross and weep in sadness for our loss; we’ll weep in joy for our blessings; and we’ll weep for our own actions that may contribute to a culture of prejudice and a climate of fear. On Easter morning Christ will rise and so will we, grateful and joyful for the fresh start and the new life we have through the love of God. God in Christ overcame death with life, despair with hope, and evil with love. Thanks be to God, we shall overcome. We know that we are called by all that is Holy and True and Just to take our place alongside the victims and perpetrators of violence and proclaim, “Enough!” We live in the shadow of the Cross; in its cool darkness we take a stand together for “doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8 adapted) If we do not stand together, then we will surely fall apart. So, let’s talk about congestion. Been stuck in traffic lately? Do you plan your day around traffic patterns, choosing to leave your home to attend to errands or get to work or shuttle children based on when you hope roadways will be the clearest? Do you think our traffic congestion has a negative impact on whether Atlanta is attractive to businesses that are looking to relocate? And finally, are you willing to pay $112 a year alongside everyone else to transform Metro Atlanta? If you answered yes to these five questions, then please consider how you will cast your vote on July 31. Imagine a MARTA station at Emory University. Consider the benefits of improved safety for bike lanes and pedestrian access in our fair county. Envision improved interchanges at I-285 and GA 400, I-85 and I-285, I-75 and Windy Hill North and more. Visualize 100% of our tax dollars being invested locally, with local oversight, local accountability, and local impact. Let me say a word about what I see on TV and hear in the street. There is a cultural phenomenon sweeping our nation and spread on the airwaves that is increasingly anti-tax. However, this proposed tax is an opportunity for us to address something now that we should have done years ago. If we wait another 20, 30 years, it will surely be too late. Right now a collective public and private sector effort is afoot across the Atlanta Metropolitan Area to transform our city. To learn more, please go to transformatlanta.com. I will be voting on July 31 in favor of investing $112 of my income via a one cent tax in order to help change the shape and direction of our sacred, shared space. Divertor

Saturday Night Live used to show brief cartoons by Robert Smigel. Smigel called his SNL satirical series “TV Funhouse.” In 2005, SNL aired a cartoon that imagined political leaders calling on a superhero named Divertor to distract the public from the real issues of the day. Divertor drew attention away from crises by creating celebrity scandals for people to worry about. Deregulation wrecking Wall Street? No sweat! Divertor would simply induce an actress to misbehave until her antics made headlines. No reason to ask hard questions about gas prices doubling when we can obsess on who is going to rehab. Like a jester in the throne room, Robert Smigel used humor to speak truth to power. Have you noticed that folks argue about matters which demand much attention yet in the long run are of little or no consequence? Wedge issues dominate the airwaves from talk radio to news networks to internet chatter. For example, do you recall watching pundits talk ad infinitum about whether an Islamic house of worship should be built in lower Manhattan four blocks away from where the World Trade Center towers once stood? Yet at the time we neglected to discuss in public forums the far-reaching impact of fundamentalism in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, political parties, schools of economics, the law, and so forth. Remember observing law school student Sandra Fluke stand up to an all-male panel to advocate reproductive rights and health care for women? Afterward the subsequent analysis got sidetracked when Rush Limbaugh called her a derogatory name. Bigots seek to dominate airwaves and silence challengers; who is responsible for allowing that to happen? Again, a golden opportunity for public discourse was diverted. The Church of Jesus Christ is neither immune nor innocent from distracting and diverting itself from addressing social matters of substance. Christian Centurypublished an academic survey of sermons preached in the early 1960s. The study examined what top three social topics were tackled in American pulpits. At the time the Civil Rights Movement was in full swing, the Viet Nam War was heating up, and an entire generation’s passion for change was palatable. The survey revealed, however, that preachers concentrated on the “evils of gambling, drinking, and divorce.” The study went on to explore the top social topics preached on 25 years later during the 1990s. Since by the Nineties millions of Americans played the lottery (gambling), alcohol use was commonplace (drinking), and half of all marriages were no longer (divorce), so the issues ministers chose to address evolved as well. The study illuminated that in the past decade one was apt to hear a preacher speak against abortion, immigration, homosexuality and gay marriage. Preaching focused on God’s judgment rather than on human rights and civil rights. Four years ago in 2008, in the week leading up to the national election in November, our church received a packet in the mail. The large envelope included a pair of sermons to be preached against abortion and gay marriage. The packet made me laugh and cry, feel anger and become hopeful. Did the senders think your pastor was too lazy or ignorant or desperate to listen to the Holy Spirit and you, to create and deliver a fresh word for today? (And who told them!) Or did they think that they knew best what needed to be proclaimed and received in this sacred space? Or did they think that we were sitting around, twiddling our thumbs while waiting for sermon notes dripping with hateful theology and narcissistic ideology to fall like sour manna from the sky? The timing was not accidental. Divertor was in full gear. Several of my kinfolk are looking for meaningful employment; half of my daughter’s high school classmates will not graduate; beloved families close to me are on the brink of losing their homes. Preachers and politicians, spare me the wedge issues, please. What do you think are the most relevant topics of the day in need of church attention? The church has no needs; our divine vocation is to mobilize and respond to the needs of the people of God. Take a moment to think of practical concerns and social arenas that you would like to hear addressed from a biblical and theological framework, and pass them on to your pastor. In 2012, we will not be diverted from being one with our neighbors in need. We will not let pettiness distract us from that which is most important. We will not let wedge issues come between us. We will release our fears and hold on to our faith. So whenever Divertor shows up, laugh and say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” We are adults who will not be distracted; we can handle the responsibility of building a global village, one step at a time. Team of Rivals: Work With Whomever God Sends

Dear Friends, Greetings! I do hope this finds you well. After I preached last Sunday, a number of folks in the congregation asked if I would send to Congress the gist of the Word that was delivered: God calls us to work with whomever God sends. So I pulled that section out of the sermon (I like to think of it as a nest that rests in the tree of the message) and re-worked it into a Focus column for our local church newsletter. A copy is also going to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and to the Speakers of the House and Senate. Enjoy Shalom, James My father, the Rev. George E. Calvert (1928-2005), taught junior high school for 15 years. One day a boy raised his hand in class. George Calvert was delighted, because the boy had never once raised his hand to ask a question. George called on him immediately. “Mr. Calvert,” asked the boy, “do you have a white dog? It looks like you have white dog hair all over your pants.” George said that in every class there would be a couple of adolescents who were challenged to sit still for 45 minutes, much less 6 or 7 hours. The other faculty in the Teachers’ Lounge would moan, saying, “If only I didn’t have so and so in my class, then everything would be perfect.” My dad would respond, “Work with whomever God sends into your space. The child you are complaining about really needs your love. Besides, if so and so left, another would take his or her place!” Regardless of who is on your committee, in the pew, or in the group, work with whomever God sends. Regardless of who is your next door neighbor, your colleague at work, or the politician in office, work with whomever God sends. Work with whoever is your leader, your teacher, your pastor, your elder, your child, and your soul mate. God has sent these souls into your life, not for you to fight or argue with or define yourself over against, nor to do your spiteful best to overcome, disdain, or undermine. God sent these blessed souls into your life to be partners in God’s service, and for them to be yours. George taught me to work with whomever the majority elected into office. We don’t need to agree or like everything s/he does, but we do need to work as a team. Citizenship starts with voting; citizenship continues with responsible actions. Our nation can ill afford to waste energy tearing down our leaders; at the same time our leaders need to cease putting down the American people. If ever there was a time for Americans from all walks of life to pull our oars together for a common cause and a shared destination, now is the time. Now is the time to start cooperating, to start reconciling, to stop tearing down and start building up. Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote a terrific biography about Abraham Lincoln and his Cabinet called Team of Rivals. Abraham Lincoln’s wisdom, patience, self-made education, humble background, and multiple losses in campaigns and life all contributed to make Lincoln our greatest President. One of his leadership gifts was his willingness to gather together the wisest minds in the nation and place them on his cabinet to serve as his advisers and help run the country – even though many of the advisers had been his rivals for the presidency. Initially, most neither liked nor respected him. However, rather than surround himself with “yes men,” with advisers who might agree with everything Lincoln said, he sought out divergent opinions. He then synthesized the collective ideas into a clear plan of action for the greater good. At the root of this remarkable approach was a humility grounded in the love of God and an eye toward healing a hurting nation. Lincoln listened, learned, and led. He worked with whomever God sent, including rivals, rejects, rebels, and reconcilers. Take the first step toward working together: listen with a heart of love. Learn from the wisdom of our ancestors about being humble enough to listen to those in our midst through whom God is working to heal the world, to heal our communities, to heal our relationships, and to heal our bodies and souls.
