Applications for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship
Applications are now being received for the Charles F. Schwab Ministerial Scholarship. The Scholarship is designed to help Georgia Disciples pursue seminary education and honors a distinguished Disciples pastor who served the First Christian Church from 1942 – 1972.
Schwab, a native of Kansas, studied at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 and the M.A. Degree in 1927. After serving as pastor for several years he enrolled in Yale Divinity School where he received B.D. Degree in 1937. Phillips honored him with the Doctor of Divinity Degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Scholarship a candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Hold membership in a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia for a minimum of one year, or show evidence of having been a member of such a congregation prior to beginning an educational career;
- Have successfully completed one year’s requirements toward the Master of Divinity Degree at a theological school affiliated with the Division of Higher Education of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), or Candler School of Theology at Emory University or Columbia Theological Seminary, other schools are considered on a case-by-case study;
- Have a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the institution where enrolled concerning the student’s promise for ministry.
The Schwab Scholarship will be awarded and administered by the Endowment Trustees of the First Christian Church of Decatur with the advice of the ministerial staff of that church.
In making the award the committees will give consideration to academic achievement, financial need and promise for ministry.
The award will be announced by the end of June, the month of Dr. Schwab’s birthday and the anniversary month of his ordination.
Completed applications must be received by May 1, 2024.
